The largest legal claim in UK history filed against Mastercard

MasterCard has been sued for $18.72bn for setting interchange fees at an unlawfully high level which were eventually passed on to consumers through inflated prices. The excessive processing fees are alleged to have been used for 16 years (between 1992 and 2008). The legal ground for the procedure has been laid by the European Court of Justice in 2014 in a ruling stating that MasterCard infringed EU antitrust rules by charging high interchange fees. The collective claim is the first filed under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 enabling consumer groups to seek collective compensation and has been filed on behalf of all UK consumers at the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) in London. MasterCard ‘firmly disagrees’ with the allegations.
